Open Question: Problems Connecting my 360 to Live?

I have a wireless router connected to my cable modem which is next to one computer in my house. I'm in New York, and I use Optimum Online, which is 15Mbits down - 2Mbits up. This setup is about 20 feet away from the computer that I use. I have a USB wireless adapter plugged into my computer, which I use to connect to my router. A quick internet speed test shows I get about 12Mbits/2Mbits from my computer with nothing else using that connection, which is plenty fast for me. I'm running Windows Vista, and I have my 360 connected to my PC through a bridge, which connects it to the internet. I set up the bridge simply by going to Network Connections in the Control Panel, selecting my wireless connection and my wired connection (which is what's connecting me to my 360), right clicking, and creating a bridge. I also have my 360 enabled under Media Sharing, which I got to through the Networking and Sharing Center. When I turn on and use my 360, everything works and is recognized fine, expect for one thing: Live Party. I can play online (albeit with a bit more lag then usual when playing games), and I can still download files from Markteplace quickly without a problem. Though when I start up Live Party, I often got disconnected, or have 5-10 second periods where I couldn't hear anybody, but my friends could here me. I talked to my uncle, who's good with networking, and he was surprised I was even able to connect to the internet at all though that bridge. He would of thought I would need a cross over cable. So instead, he gave me a little box that converts two cables into a cross over cable by having them both connect to it. I tried that, and even though I was no longer being disconnected from Live Parties (and I wasn't experiencing any more abnormal in game lag), I was still having that mic cut out. So what the hell is the deal? Have any of you heard of this problem, and if so do you know how I can fix it? I'm not spending $100 on a ****ing proprietary Wi-Fi adapter because Microsoft decides to screw over their customers like that. How can I fix this problem?  more

Open Question: Help me pick a DSL plan please! ?

I have always had cable internet service, so I know dooodles about DSL. Looking at the service providers in my area, I can choose between 1.5 MBPS for $35 a month, 3.0 for $40 or 6.0 for $45. both my son and I do school online. He plays a whole bunch of World of Warcrack. Other than that, its just basic stuff. I may sometimes watch a movie, but that is rare. So, considering that money is very tight, what do I need?  more

Open Question: remote access to LAN hard drive?

I have been looking at the Western Digital world addition network drive which allows you to access the hard drive via internet connection remotely via an IP address. I am curious if I can do something similar with my desk top computer and one of it's hard drives without paying for a service? It is hooked up to the router/cable modem on the LAN side. Can you partition a portion of the drive and limit that portion to remote access? The main objective is to make that hard drive to store master files that will need to be accessed, updated, or created remotely via one of two laptops. One laptop is running XP the other Vista. The desk top will either be running XP or Vista but none of the computers will be running the pro versions of windows. HELP!!! =)  more

Open Question: Xbox Live question: Using an ethernet cable and I need help!?

Well I only have one computer in my house broadband. I have no wireless router. And I am getting an xbox pro for christmas. The problem is that I went down stairs to check the ethernet cable slot the slot already had a cable in it! So I unplugged it and clicked internet explorer, and internet explorer won't work with this unplugged. So I found this thing that basically goes into the ethernet port on a modem and has two ethernet ports on the other end. It basically duplicates the port into two. I was wondering if this will work with my xbox360. Will I be able to run my internet and Xbox Live at the same time? Thankyou, Aaron  more

Open Question: Xbox360 Live Connectivity Problem?

Well now, my problem is that my Xbox360 doesn't seem to want to connect to my network. For a starter I'll explain what I'm using: A router which is wireless This connects to my PC wirelessly, I then have my Xbox connected to it through a Ethernet cable. (Alternately have a wireless internet for xbox as well) The Wireless adaptor for the Xbox doesn't want to connect at all it fails to find a network. The Link: RED and the ACT: GREY. I've tried -Reconnecting internet -On/Off method for router (Lol sometimes it's worth a try) -Typed the WEP Key properly many times -Manually inputting IP/DNS addresses. All Fail. The Ethernet cable gets a bit further and onto the IP Address= Failed section. The Ethernet shows up as a Link:GREEN Act:GREY I don't know why this one doesn't work as it's connected straight into the PC. Anyone know a solution, and advice on it as I'm not a computer whizz. Thanks for your efforts and time, anyone who attempts to solve it that is.  more

Open Question: Anyway to avoid disabling and enabling by lan card to get internet access?

Every time I seem to let my computer go to sleep or shutdown or especially unplug the ethernet cable to my modem, my computer will not gain internet access unless, when I turn it back on or plug it back it, I go to device manager, disable my lan card and then re enable it. After that it comes back and connects. If I let it sit there I'll wait an hour or two for the internet and it will continue to tell me it is "identifying..." when I roll over my network indicator in the bottom right hand corner of my screen. Any ideas on how to fix this frustration ordeal? Greatly appreciated I've also tried resetting the IP settings.. doing every else Windows Vista suggest (though many know it doesn't do much but waste fifteen minutes of your time for you to see the nothing changed) and it still doesn't work. It may be a UI glitch but it prevents me from connecting unless I disable and enable I should also probably mention I have built in Wi-Fi but it is always disabled as I don't use Wi-Fi unless I go out with my computer which is rare.  more

Resolved Question: Living within your means - Advice needed please!?

My husband was laid off 4 wks ago. He’s been collecting unemployment but obviously it’s literally less than half of what he used to make weekly. But we’ll take what we can get. We don’t qualify for any assistance with food, with health insurance, nothing. I have made phone calls and looked at applications and my income alone puts us in the “make too much money” category. So, we’re on our own. We’ve cut expenses the best we can. We’ve had no internet, phone or cable for over a year because we can’t afford it. We have a truck payment we’re stuck with because well, nobody wants to buy trucks with gas prices as they were. And with them dropping, nobody has jobs so nobody wants to take over that type of payment. And, we tried checking with CarMax and they’d “take” our truck for $11,000 and we owe about $14,000. So we’d eat that (still owe it to the bank) and have no money leftover to purchase another car. Now comes the bigger issue: Back a year ago my husband was laid off. It put us in a huge financial bind because we had just had a newborn baby and just gone to court for child support. We fell behind on payments when the whole housing crisis officially hit. So we’re in foreclosure but nothing has been finalized as of yet. Our house has been listed for sale for over a year and we’ve had tons of offers and almost sales. But because the banks are swamped, we’ve had 5 buyers walk due to waiting. We would call and call the banks to push our sale along but everyone’s mailboxes are full. And the cycle repeats. My realtor called my husband today and asked him a question. Somehow the topic came up that we COULD save our home because they can slash our mortgage payments in half. And they can work with us. My husband wants to keep the house and I’m a bit weary because we simply can’t afford it. He has no job, no income, to assume you can afford this and put yourself right back in that same BAD financial spot isn’t going to do you any good. So because I fear we can’t afford it, I say no. Because he can’t accept what’s been happening, he wants to keep it. I don’t know how I can put this into words for him. He flat out won’t listen to me. The only advantage is that in order to “save” our home I assume they’d need both of our signatures in order to make it happen. I won’t sign if I’m not comfortable. He hasn’t had a job in 4 wks, hasn’t really looked (my opinion). And so now that he knows about the chance to save the home, he says he’s looking. WTF? I need advice on how I can get through this. I absolutely don’t know what more to say or how to get my point across. And I’m looking for advice because as a married couple, this is something we need to do together. We need to be on the same page. And let me add, my husband has NEVER had to deal with money or be responsible about it. Please advise how I can speak to my husband about this. I'm at my wits end. Let's not forget to factor in taxes and insurance. Dropping the mortgage is one thing, but we all know taxes and insurance are fairly set. How can you job hunt without those three? Easy...the library. It's free. We have a cell phone so he can get calls and make calls. And to be honest, we're far from being the only people in this situation. All apartments around here say "foreclosure friendly" because they know renting is the only option for some. I won't file bankruptcy. If my husband would work with me, we can pay off our debts. I'm not worried about it. But if we don't live within our means, we'll never get out of debt. And debt/credit is something my husband doesn't seem to think is an important thing to fix. And honestly, where did I ever say I wasn’t working? I’ve kept my job for 6 yrs. It’s been the only thing keeping us from drowning completely. I know nobody can predict the future so that’s of course where it gets tough. But say we DO go along with the house and we keep it, what if he loses his job AGAIN? It’s happened twice already with his field. He’s in construction and we all know how unstable that is. Heck does it even matter where you work anymore? Everyone seems to be laying off. I just worry that if we make things happen, that the same mistakes will take place again because we NEED two incomes to afford anything. And we haven’t had that for a while. So we’re behind and it’ll take time to catch up. How can you catch up if you’re always behind? I would like to keep my house if I had 110% confidence we’d be okay financially. But obviously I’m not feeling all that secure and confident, hence why I’m weary! I have my dreams too, but I’m also a realistic person.  more

We need to be on the same page. And let me add, my husband has NEVER had to deal with money or be responsible about it. Please advise how I can speak to my husband about this. I'm at my wits end. Thanks! I have the Dave Ramsey book. I’ve read it myself. But with my husband not being on board, it’s VERY hard to do. Remember he said the “spit and shake”? Well if my husband isn’t working with me here, I’m not sure how I can make it all happen. I did just recently ask him again, now that he’s home with no job, if we could try this Ramsey thing together. But still no answer. Which I think gives me my answer. Do you think Ramsey's Makeover can be done alone without my husband working with me? Why in the world would you take the step to say YES to affording a home that you clearly cannot afford? We can’t live off my income alone. And my income alone sure as hell won’t pay the bills. If we could afford the house, hey, by all means, let’s save it. But the reality is that he has no job, no income, and to assume we’d be okay for when he finds a job, well that’s basically repeating the same of what happened before. We live in FL. Is that one of those states? My husband’s child support case really isn’t your business. But if you must know, it’s not for my son. It’s for the daughter he just found out he had. The mother kept her a secret for her own good and then it came out a little bit ago. We took her to court. Hence why we pay child support. I DO work full time thank you very much. My husband should have to find ONE job before I take on TWO jobs. I’ll never see my son. And that doesn’t seem fair to me. I agree with you, he SHOULD be delivering pizzas or working at CVS or Home Depot. I can’t force him to do anything. I work, I do my share of contributing but it’s a two way street.  more

Open Question: XBOX 360 Live won't connect... Hours spent trying to get the connection... Help?

Well, I've spent the last, ooo three weeks and countless hours trying to get my Xbox 360 to connect to the net so I can play the holy grail of LIVE! However, every time I tried connecting to my pc via a shared connection using the Ethernet cable... nothing. The Xbox fails the IP test... so I went to Xbox support and did it manually... YAY the IP address is valid... but not the DNS, I can never get the two to work together. The Local Area Connection doesn't work either, there's not even an option to share with other networks with is mildly baffling :S PPPoE I can't even get to work and I'm beginning to lose my rag :D! My computer goes through a rubbish little BT modem, and a USB port next to it which feed into my PC... Now here's the thing, I got it to work the first time for a few months earlier this year... then my PC crashed and I lost everything. Soooo now when I tried to create the same connection it simply won't do it. 'Little or no Connectivity' it reads for the LAN. And I've tried all the manual IP addies and things, and that says 'conflicting address'. Countless hours of internet research; one usless call to Microsoft mean I still can't get live :'(! Not to mention I haven't had Live for 4 months, and those lovely people at Microsoft are still charging me monthly, which is almost impossible to cancel. Any ideas anyone? I'm not a computer whizz, and it seems you need to be to have fun on Live these days :/ ...  more

I am on a Dell XPS 420 computer on an Intel 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network adapter, with a Linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router, (the desktop is hardwired to the router not wireless) and a standard Time Warner Cable modem. anyway enough of the details on that, i am sometimes getting disconnected from the internet, it usually happens when i am on Mozilla Firefox, or World of Warcraft, Warcraft 3, or Steam (Counter-strike, half-life, etc. engine). i can't narrow it down any more than that but it is very annoying, when i do a diagnose and repair through the network connections control panel menu, it says that it cannot connect the DNS Primary server or somethign and it has like an IP adress after than, i end up having to restart everything (Modem, Router, and computer.). This is starting to get very annoying and really want some help. My guesses are my network card or maybe my router. Thanks in advanced yahoo users. Just now it stopped working for good, i cannot get it to reconnect no matter how many restarts i do. please help i am on my step dads laptop now.  more

Open Question: Why does my firewall keep turning off?

Every once and a while, my firewall just turns off and then the internet says it's connected. It really isn't connected though, only partially. I can go on SOME webpages, but like youtube pages work but it says the video is unavailable. But like myspace won't work at all... then i go into network connections and it says local area connection cable unplugged... i have a gateway t-1631 with a wireless switch on the side (sometimes i accidentally turn the switch to off, but that's not it this time.) could it be my Limewire? I mean i have windows vista home premium and it scans for viruses then asks me if I want to remove them, which I do. ??  more
