moreResolved Question: Wireless downloading effecting internet speed?
Having just switched ISPs we now have a 8mb broadband connection with a wireless router. The problem is that my housemates have a tendency to set their computers off downloading stuff wirelessly (p2p stuff too). I know this slows the internet down as the 8mb speed does not apply to the router, or something like that, and bandwidth is affected, but I don't really know the technical ins and outs. So in order for them to accept my explanation of why they can't download films or whatever constantly without connecting through a cable could someone please explain the details of it all?
moreOpen Question: Can you help my Vista Laptop connect to internet?
Where I am currently living I have two computers. One is a P4 XP desktop, the other a dual core laptop. The P4, which I'm using right now connects easily to the internet through an ethernet cable plugged in at the back, it connects automatically and gives me no trouble.
My Laptop is another matter. The laptop works find on other wireless networks including those in other houses. However here it just wont work. It is within signal (1 room away), in a house where other laptops can connect wirelessly, yet it will not connect itself.
I have tried plugging the ethernet cable into the laptop to connect to the LAN, it will connect to the broadband router as a 'local' connection but doesn't give internet. I have all the correct security codes and passwords and have run diagnostics but have no success and i am pulling my hair out.
Sometimes I can connect only to find that I am disconnected within 2 seconds, other(extremely rare) times I have been connected ok only to lose this the next time I turn the laptop on.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I can't phone the ISP because its not my ISP, I live in a shared house and although I have use of the Broadband I'm not the named owner of it.
I can't understand why the firewall would let my XP desktop connect by ethernet but not my laptop by ethernet.
I'll probably end up paying someone to look at it for me...
yes more than one computer is using the network, about 5 are. But, if you disconnect 1 then my laptop still wont connect.

moreResolved Question: How can I turn off my broadband internet for some users but not others?
I used to have a password account with the option to log in for myself only (Windows XP administrator) but not for the Guest account. The internet provider changed to a system in which the internet is available to every user of the computer and there's nothing I can do about it. No log-in: just turn on the computer and the only way to shut off the internet is to disable the network (which disables it for me, too). Or unplug the cable, but then the guests could simply plug it back in. Will I have to manually disable the network every time I log off? Or is there a hardware solution -- say, some sort of switching hub between the router that the provider installed and the PC? My internet provider doesn't like the idea of anything between its router and my PC, as they want to sell their own routers and charge for extra computers.
moreOpen Question: Broadband Internet Connection (Local Only)?
I'm using a DL-604 Ethernet Broadband Router to connect my Windows Vista Ultimate (Visionman desktop) to my Comcast internet connection.
..Or, that's what I'm attempting to do. For over two years, it has worked seamlessly, but just one week ago, when I woke up to check my mail, it said that it had a "Local Only" connection. Funnily enough, when I connect the same Ethernet cable to my laptop (which is only two feet away, and is also employing Vista Ultimate), the internet works perfectly.
I have no idea what to do, and it's beginning to wear on my nerves. Reformatting didn't help, and it's not a firewall (I've deactivated all of them just to see what works). I don't know what to do, and I'm feeling frazzled.

For the first few months my internet with quite good. I used to get around 2 mbs. Now my internet keeps going down to even 200kbs.
I have called Sky, they sent me another router (Netgear) which temporarely got my internet speed up to 1.4mb. That only lasted about a week. Now my internet keeps timing out, if I'm either on the pc or on the mobile phone using the wireless lan. I tried everything from changing the microfilter, plugging into master socket, connecting through ethernet cable and wireless and also both at the same time. None of them did any difference
Here is some info that I get on my router settings
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1856 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 41.0 db 24.5 db
Noise Margin 10.0 db 20.0 db
I do not actually get the 1.8mb/s
I have also noticed that when i plug my router into the test socket i get no connection. Is the wire disconnected or what?

moreVoting Question: WHO CAN TELL ME A LOT ABOUT ABOUT DTV ? ? ?
Hello
I'd like as much information as possible about DTVs and especially about setting one up, Add as much information as you may care to share.
Since I'm as they say, "on a fixed income", I'm looking at Visio 37"- 40" thin, flat, wall mounted models. They seem the most reasonable and their reviews nave been fairly good. If your aware of Internet stores that give better saving than Wal-Mart, Circuit city etc, I'd apreciate the information.
Include information on just what the "programming fee" they want to charge when you buy them, best types of cables and switch box set-ups to use with a turntable CD/DVD, stereo receiver, PC etc.
I have a PC with TV Analog, DTV, Composite receiver and recorder card, 3 GB memory and about 700 GB of upgraded hard drives with an AMD Athlon 3500+ 22GHz 2000 MHz processor about 25" away from it (Windows XP Media Center). Can I buy and use a Composite Video cable for that distance without signal degradation from the length?
I know little about the whole deal except for being fairly familiar with the Analog/Digital signal difference but feel free to add information on it that may be less commonly known.
I live very secluded and rural, Cable TV is not available to me. I'm presently using a roof top free over the air antenna. I will probably go with a satellite system after recovering a little from the $$$ outlay for all the above but am open to other suggestions. Are there quality "over the Internet" DTV signal reception systems available ? I currently use a Sprint SmartView USB broadband modem (I highly recommend it if you're near their towers as I am but don't have access to cable. I get constant 1500-1800 mbps download speeds and 300-400 mbps upload speeds on the Dallas server, my personal "benchmark" and the same using all east coast and Midwest servers with all west coast servers showing lightly less for some reason using www.speakeasy.com). I'm in Texas.
Thanks and regards,

1st. snag - my computer is over 6 years old and does not have an ethernet port.
What I have in mind is to have the router and phone line in one room, and the computer and peripherals in the adjacent room utilising wireless connection. Is this the best way to do it, or should I stay with a wired connection?
I want to achieve the fastest and most reliable connection practical, and am keen to avoid the frequent unscheduled disconnections I suffer with my present setup.
I would also like to eliminate the USB hub device I had to employ when I first went on Broadband, and furthermore, the six-gang mains supply unit I use next to the computer already has all sockets occupied.

My PC is a Desktop Dell Dimension 4400 with 2x USB ports/no ethernet port. RAM memory upgraded last week to 1GB, free HD space 30GB. I was hoping this would be adequate for my requirements.
Dell have supplied PCI Ethernet card (which I have not yet installed) at a cost of £70.
OS Windows XP Home SP2.
Wireless Modem router is Thomson ST585V6 supplied free with ethernet cable (AOL).
I am reluctant to spend more money on my system or internet connection owing to a cash crisis (i.e. I currently have no income).

Hi, I just want to know something that's been bothering me for some time.
I was with Tiscali broadband for 4 years which provided me a Standard USB RJ11 modem which I've used ever since. After some time I moved to TalkTalk broadband who sent me a "Router" which I've never used in my life. So any who I install my ethernet drivers for my on-board (Dell Dimension 5100) and install the "router" from the CD.
Now the problem is that I connect to the internet without problem, but the problem is that it disconnects every 5 minutes? Now I believe I figured out the problem but seek advice before moving on.
Does it matter how long the "RJ11" cable is from the phone socket? Could that be the reason, right now it's a 10M cable. (Used for the USB modem) I was going to go ahead and buy a ethernet RJ45 cable to see if that fixes the problem, but I thought I'll seek advice before I do.
So is the length from the socket matter for a Router? Should I buy a RJ45 and just set the RJ11 with the Standard 2M I received and use the RJ45 to wire to my room?
Thanks!
I mean at current time it still disconnects. It's the 3rd time trying to write this on Yahoo.
Thank you.
PS: It tends to reconnect around 30 seconds after. But it happens every 5 minutes.
Talk to Talk Talk? You gotta be kidding me. They make me cry trying to explain my situation then they put you on hold for 45 minutes and they say, "I've gone ahead and passed it onto a level 2 tech support team and they should get back to you within a few hours" but never do.
-It's an experiance. :)

moreVoting Question: Cable modem signal gets disconnected after another phone in the house gets picked up.?
I have a sky broadband router connected to the main phone downstairs and the internet works fine when this phone is in use, however when the upstairs phone is picked up it cuts the broadband signal and to get it back i have to reset the router.
Is this normal or should i ring sky or BT about getting someone out to fix the line.
